CLINTON STREET
KITCHEN
A new Kitchen that felt kitsch and vintage.
-
My client came to me initially wanting a yellow kitchen because she had seen a photo on Instagram of a Shaker style kitchen that used a vintage cabinet. She wanted a "new kitchen that felt old."
This isn't something I get asked for usually, however after getting to know her a little more we unearthed a stunning display of vintage ceramics, textiles, glassware and artwork that she had been collecting for years that used as a starting point for the design.
A yellow kitchen wouldn't have worked with the items she had, however a terracotta red had the perfect tone of colour to compliment her vintage collection.

Originally the dining room, we had to work with the existing chimney stack and window.
The original chimney was too shallow to house the extractor, so we added depth on by studding the chimney out, and increased the opening height to accommodate a comfortable standing height with shelf above.
We removed all of the old tiles from the floor and added a LVT herringbone tile throughout the kitchen and utility area that was of the same height as the new floor tiles in the bathroom.
With the room having no plumbing, we had to add water and connect drainage back to the mains, and give the room a complete electrical rewire.
The vertical radiator was repositioned to a different wall so to allow for additional kitchen cabinets under the window. Whilst the boiler was in right zone, but the pipes were in the wrong place so the plumber altered the pipework to allow for a tall shelving cabinet to be fitted next to the so the room felt balanced.

Hunting high and low on reclaims websites, I was able to procure a vintage cabinet that was a similar depth to the wall units designed to house the microwave.
Made from vintage teak, the colour matched perfectly with the IROKO worktops creating a synergy of warmth and colour through the kitchen.
To compliment the kitkat tile in the bathroom, I sourced a linear striped tile for the splash back which tied in the black accents in the lighting and electrical sockets throughout the room.
To create a more vintage vibe in the room I sourced a beautiful Folklore style fabric that perfectly complimented my clients existing artwork and textiles, which really help this new kitchen, feel more vintage.

“There were no hidden extras or surprises along the way, and I really appreciated the transparency here.”
"Everything was fully costed, with different options at different price points, which mean that I knew exactly what I would be spending from the start. There were no hidden extras or surprises along the way, and I really appreciated the transparency here. Sarah also kept me up-to-date on when the different contractors would be here, and made regular visits to make sure that everything was going to plan. This allowed me to continue going into work when I needed to. All of the different contractors that Sarah booked to work on the job were friendly and professional, which allowed me to feel comfortable both when I was at home, and when I was not there."
